<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a microorganism producing O-acetylhomoserine as an L-methionine precursor, and to provide a method of producing an L-methionine precursor using the microorganism. <P>SOLUTION: The microorganism is such as to be derived from Escherichia sp., that is, (a) derived from a bacterial strain selected from Corynebacterium sp., Leptospira sp., Deinococcus sp., Pseudomonas sp., or Mycobacterium sp., being such that, homoserine O-acetyltransferase activity is enhanced by insertion of a gene encoding homoserine O-acetyltransferase, or (b) aspartokinase or homoserine dehydrogenase activity is enhanced, or (c) having all of the characteristics of (a) and (b).
