PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce wear of a fixing member on edge portions of a recording medium, and to eliminate image quality defects at this place. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus detects the position of paper 8 conveyed to a fixing section 110, by using a paper detecting means 17 and moves the paper 8 to a reference position 24 by means of a shift unit 40, based on this paper position, a pair of registration rollers 16 are driven by the shift unit 40, and the reference position 24 for the detecting means 17 for paper conveyed to the fixing section 110 is shifted by a minute dimension for each conveyance of a fixed number of sheets of papers.
