<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cleaning device with improved sealing performance. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This cleaning device includes a cleaning member which scrapes off unnecessary matter from an image carrier, a casing having an edge surrounding an opening and a recessed space inside the opening, a pair of sliding members in contact with the peripheral surface of the image carrier to relatively slide at each of both ends of a contact portion between the cleaning member and the peripheral surface of the image carrier, a projection portion as a part of the sliding member projecting from the sliding member at the position before scraping by the cleaning member where the cleaning member contacts the image carrier, a sealing member sealing a gap between the cleaning member and the projection part and the edge of the casing and being applied with liquid, and a dam part which dams the sealing member provided on the edge of the casing and applied on the edge further before the projection part projecting to the position before scraping by the cleaning member.
