A polyolefin produced using a chromium oxide catalyst associated with silica, alumina, zirconia or thoria, is pyrolyzed, e.g. at 600 DEG to 1200 DEG F., to give a linear, thermal decomposition product of molecular weight between 200 and 800. Polyethylene is the preferred polyolefin used but other polymers and the methods of production thereof are disclosed in Specifications 790,195 and 804,641. The pyrolysis is preferably in the absence of air and may be in the presence of 2,6-di-t-butyl-4-methyl phenol as antioxidant. The products may be obtained by distilling off simultaneously with the heat treatment, e.g. at 400 DEG to 600 DEG F. and at a pressure not exceeding 100 mm. of Hg. Applications are as intermediates for lubricating oil additives and for surface-active agents, and as plasticizers for resins, in particular, polystyrene. |
