The method involves providing a multidimensional initial threshold that is used as unrobust interface (24) to release a restraint system during existence of a predetermined combination of values of two signals (14, 16) of internal and external crash sensors. The multidimensional initial threshold is low-pass filtered using a maximal number of five filter coefficients to determine a multidimensional trigger threshold that is used as robust interface (28). The trigger threshold releases the restraint system during usage of the restraint system if the combination of values of the signals exists. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a controller for determining a multidimensional trigger threshold for a restraint system of a vehicle (2) a computer program with program code for implementing a method for determining a multidimensional trigger threshold for a restraint system of a vehicle when the program is implemented in a data processing system.
