PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus in which a cleaning member that scrapes the toner remaining on a surface of an image carrier is arranged to contact with/separate from the image carrier, and in which the toner deposited on the edge part of the cleaning member is removed, while suppressing lowering of productivity. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes a secondary transfer part 50 that transfers a toner image carried on an intermediate transfer belt 43 to a sheet, and the cleaning member 92, that removes the toner remaining on the surface of the intermediate transfer belt 43 after transfer, by making its edge to abut against the surface of the intermediate transfer belt 43, and further, includes a drive motor that makes the cleaning member 92 contact with/separate from the surface of the intermediate transfer belt 43; and a control part 80, that estimates the amount of the toner deposited at the edge of the cleaning member 92, and controls the drive motor, when the estimated amount of the deposited toner becomes equal to or more than the threshold, so that the cleaning member 92 is temporarily separated from the surface of the intermediate transfer belt 43, in a subsequent transfer non-executing section.
