<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently detect knocking even when end gas is formed in different sites. Ž<P>SOLUTION: On a side face 26a of a cylinder block 26, a knock sensor 25 is mounted which has a vibrator to be displaced on a predetermined sensor axis S. On the upper part of a cylinder 3, a vent roof type combustion chamber 8 is formed where a pair of intake ports 10, 10 are connected to a pair of exhaust ports 11, 11. An open/close controllable valve element 22 is provided inside one of the intake ports 10 so that a swirling flow can be formed. In view from the direction of an axis (P) of the cylinder, the sensor axis S of the knock sensor 25 is inclined a predetermined angle θ of 45° or greater to a reference line L perpendicular to a crank shaft 2.
