The starter (10) has a starter motor (12) coupled to an internal combustion engine (20) via a pinion (16). A switching device (22) engages the pinion in a gear rim (18) of engine and connects the motor to direct current voltage supply systems (28, 29). The motor is supplied with a reduced motor current using a resistance element (54) in one stage and is supplied with a main current in another stage. The resistance element is integrated into the device (22). Electrical contacts of the device (22) are designed as the resistance element and a low resistance-connection element (56), respectively.
