PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make focusing adjustment possible in which attribute of a field is taken into consideration and to thereby improve focusing performance. SOLUTION: An imaging apparatus 18 includes an image pickup face for catching a field through a focusing lens 12 to repeatedly output a field image. An AF evaluation circuit 26 leaches a high frequency component from a field image repeatedly formed by the imaging apparatus 18. A CPU 28 moves the focusing lens 12 in the optical axis direction so that a one or more maximum points are detected where the high frequency component leached by the AF evaluation circuit 26 shows the maximum value. The CPU 28 also specifies the attribute of the field caught by the image pickup face in connection with the movement processing of the focusing lens 12, selecting one of the one or more maximum points detected in the foregoing manner on the basis of the attribute of the field.
