PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrolyte for a fuel cell with excellent protonic conductivity and handleability useful as electrolyte for a fuel cell as a constituent material for a solid polymer fuel cell and a direct-methanol fuel cell. SOLUTION: The electrolyte for a fuel cell is structured of a polymeric copolymer having a hydrophilic site with a sulfonic acid group as a side chain and a repetition unit not showing protonic conductivity as a main chain. A ratio (mol%) of the repetition unit not showing protonic conductivity is within a range of 0 to 20 to a repetition unit 1 showing protonic conductivity, and a weight-average molecular weight is within a range of 10,000 to 200,000.
