PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for setting ad hoc mode connection using a cellular network in a cellular wireless communication system are provided to determine parameters necessary for ad hoc mode connection setup by a base station, thereby reducing complexity of a mobile terminal. CONSTITUTION: A cellular communication unit(608) transmits a request message for ad hoc mode connection to a base station of a cellular network. The cellular communication unit receives SSID(Service Set IDentifier) and IP(Internet Protocol) address information from the base station. A controller(612) sets connection of the ad hoc mode with an opposing mobile terminal using the SSID and IP address information.
