<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retardation plate which can be formed to be a relatively thin layer and exhibits wavelength dispersiveness with a phase difference of about λ/2 or about λ/4 to light of a wavelength λ in nearly whole visible light region. <P>SOLUTION: The retardation plate comprises a monolayer film obtained by orienting a birefringent chain polymer having at least a repeating unit (A) represented by formula (I) and a repeating unit (B) represented by formula (II). In the formula (I), R<SP>1</SP>denotes H or C<SB>1-8</SB>alkyl group; R<SP>2</SP>and R<SP>6</SP>each independently denote H, C<SB>1-4</SB>linear or branched alkyl group, C<SB>1-4</SB>linear or branched alkoxy group, C<SB>1-4</SB>linear or branched thioalkoxy group, halogen, nitro group, amino group, hydroxyl group or thiol group (but R<SP>2</SP>and R<SP>6</SP>are not simultaneously H); and R<SP>3</SP>-R<SP>5</SP>each independently denote H or a substituent.
