In a friction plate clutch, springs 18 acting between axially fixed cups 19 and an axially displaceable presser plate 13 are endowed, when at lest, each with a convex form towards the clutch axis by inclined spring seats cast on the presser plate, as shown and in Figs. 6, 7 (not shown), stamped or punched on the cups, Fig. 8 (not shown), or formed on both the presser-plate and the cups, Fig. 10 (not shown), so as to compensate for deformation due to centrifuging of the springs and thereby prevent contact between the springs and the cups at high driving speeds. The springs 18 are centred at one end by pegs 22 on the presser-plate, and at the other end by cup constrictions 23, as shown, or cup inturned flanges (27), Figs. 6, 7 (not shown). The cups have retaining flanges 25 and are engaged in holes 24 in a cover 20 bolted to the driving flywheel 10. In Figs. 8 10 (not shown), correct inclined seat cup orientation is maintained by peripheral cup projections (28) engaging cover notches 29. If, although not preferred, the endowed convexity is sufficient for spring and cup contact at rest, the cup insides may be surface hardened, as by cyaniding (e.g. in baths of salts), carbonitriding, gaseous annealing, or metal depositing (e.g. hard chromium or nickel tin, chrome plating or accelerated nitriding), and/or friction between spring and cup may be reduced, as by lubrication, phosphatation, sulphinuzation, soft nitriding, metal depositing (e.g. nickel tin), or application of MOS 2 in powder, grease or varnish form. The cups are formed, by folding, cutting or stamping, before treatment. In Fig. 7 (not shown), the spring turns are of square cross-section for better resistance to deformation. The presser-plate 13 is coupled for rotation with the flywheel 10 as by mortise and tenon, or tangential straps, and is moved for clutch release as by levers and a thrust bearing.
