PURPOSE: A reciprocating compressor is provided to reduce dead volume between a discharge valve and a piston in the saving operation by controlling the top dead center of the piston. CONSTITUTION: A reciprocating compressor comprises a drive motor, a sleeve(121), a connecting rod, and a piston(123). The drive motor having a crank shaft is installed in an internal space of a sealed container. The piston moves up and down in the compression space of the cylinder. The cylinder has one exhaust hole(124a) and a mode conversion unit(130). The exhaust hole passes through the compression space of the cylinder. The exhaust hole lets out some parts of the compressed refrigerant. The mode conversion unit selectively opens and closes the exhaust hole in order to leak or block the refrigerant of the compression space.
