<p>1289573 Braking assemblies GENERAL MOTORS CORP 25 June 1970 [2 July 1969] 30852/70 Heading F2E A vehicle brake is cooled during its operation by providing at least one sealed heat pipe assembly 18, 20 the or each of which contains an inert liquid and has an evaporator section 38, 40 arranged to absorb heat generated by the brake to evaporate the liquid in the section and a condenser section in which the vaporized liquid is cooled, the condenser section being for this purpose connected to a heat dispersing means. The liquid formed in the or each condenser section returns to the evaporator section through capillary means, e.g. a tube like wick lining 46, in the or each sealed heat pipe assembly. In the construction shown there are provided two heat pipe assemblies 18, 20 each assembly having four sealed pipes 42, 44. The evaporator sections 38, 40 are housed in respective pads 26, 28 which are in light rubbing contact with a brake disc 12 under the action of springs (Fig. 2, not shown). The heat pipe assemblies are arcuate in shape, lie in planes parallel to the plane of the brake disc 12 (Fig. 1, not shown) and are provided with cooling fins 36 which constitute the heat dispersing means. The evaporator sections may be formed as part of the brake caliper assembly (Figs. 5, 6, not shown) and may be interposed between the backing plate of the brake pad and the actuating piston therefor (Fig. 6, not shown). In a vehicle having a plurality of brakes each brake may be provided with at least one evaporator section of a heat pipe assembly, the condenser sections of the assemblies being sited at a common point. The condenser sections may be air cooled as described above or liquid cooled.</p> |
