PURPOSE: A starting aid for a high intensity discharge lamp is provided to perform a high intensity discharge lamp by colliding a photon generated by a dielectric barrier discharge to a cathode. CONSTITUTION: A high intensity discharge lamp includes a discharge tube, a cathode, an anode, and a second cathode. The discharge tube(12) is made of an insulation material. The cathode is attached to the end of one side of the discharge tube. The anode(16) is attached to the end of an opposite side of the discharge tube. The second cathode(30) is positioned in an outer surface of the discharge tube at a first region. A gap and the first region(18) are positioned between the second cathode and the anode.
