PURPOSE: A digital image processing apparatus facilitating composition setting of an image and a controlling method thereof are provided to display a distance from a frame to an outer boundary of an image, thereby enabling a user to easily set composition. CONSTITUTION: A photographing unit(110) captures an image of a subject. A frame generating unit(120) generates a frame displaying the outline of the subject. A supplementary UI generating unit(130) generates a supplementary UI. The supplementary UI indicates the distance from the frame to an outer boundary of the image. A display unit(140) displays the generated frame and supplementary UI.
