The device e.g. spectrometer, has a pyroelectric type measure detector (17) placed on a measure optical path, where the path is cross-flown by measure light beam issued from a light source (12) e.g. LED. A self-calibrating unit has a creating unit (15) creating a reference optical path that is cross-flown by reference light beam issued from the light source. A wave length filter e.g. fabry-Perot variation filter, is located behind a measure cell (9) on the measure optical path and associated to the measure detector and a pyroelectric type reference detector (18). An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling an operating parameter of an engine of a motor vehicle.
