The component group has a device (3) for axially positioning a scale carrier (2) relative to a shaft (1) in exact axial distance (z) from reference surface (B). The device includes two distance pieces (3.1, 3.2). The pieces arranged together are in contact with multiple reference points (PR) of the carrier and with the surface. The piece (3.2) is movable in such a manner that the piece (3.1) is axially movable after movement of the piece (3.2) and is removable after positioning the carrier. The carrier includes a hub (2.2) made up of glass. An independent claim is also included for a method for axial positioning of a scale carrier relative to a shaft in a predetermined distance from reference surface.
