The method involves detecting acceleration in a horizontal plane of a vehicle (FZ) to determine a roll-over process depending on acceleration and a rotary motion. The transition of the force-determined condition of the vehicle to a force-free condition of the vehicle is recognized, where the force-determined condition is recognized in an inertial event, and the force-free condition is recognized without acceleration and/or circular acceleration conditions. The inertial event is recognized on the basis of a threshold value excess of the acceleration. An independent claim is also included for a controller for controlling a personal protection unit for a vehicle. |
