The system has a hydrocarbon retaining system (22) comprising a hydrocarbon retaining device e.g. hydrocarbon trap, with a smaller porosity than another hydrocarbon retaining device. A controller (12) selectively routes exhaust gases of an engine (10) to the hydrocarbon retaining devices to store exhaust hydrocarbons, where the controller selectively routes fuel vapors from a fuel system (18) to the hydrocarbon retaining system. The controller selectively purges the stored hydrocarbons from the hydrocarbon retaining system to an engine intake (23). An independent claim is also included for a system for managing emissions of an engine of a vehicle.
