The system has an electric motor (20) that provides traction power to a vehicle (10). An inverter is coupled to the electric motor to provide alternating current to the electric motor. A fuel cell (22) is coupled to the inverter, and the inverter provides power from a fuel cell to the electric motor. Another inverter is coupled to the electric motor to provide alternating current to the electric motor. A controller (18) is coupled to the two inverters to provide constant power from the fuel cell during operation of the electric motor. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an automotive drive system (2) a method for controlling an electric motor.
