A method for collecting and storing of thermal energy has separate heat absorbing modules (14) taken sequentially from a cold stack (24) and passed through a heating zone (12) to absorb heat and then passed to a hot storage stack (30) from where the thermal energy can be extracted as required. The modules are directly heated in the heating zone either singly or in batches by direct contact with a heat transfer medium, by radiation etc. The number of modules and the logistics for moving them through the heating zone is determined by the heat transfer requirements of the system. The modules are recycled as required. |
