Sending a log of accessed data prior to executing disable command in lost computer

A portable computer includes a transceiver configured to receive a disable command and in response transmit a log of data that has been accessed 46 prior to execute the disable command 48. The disable command is preferably sent 44 by a user or authorized agent in response to the computer being lost or stolen. Preferably the log is of data accessed since a benchmark time which may be a predetermined time or may be identified in the disable command. The log is maintained by a software agent on the computer and may be encrypted/hashed. The disable command may be encrypted and can also specify the address to which the log is to be sent. In response to the disable command the computer may render itself substantially unusable such as by modification of the BIOS to prevent booting. Alternatively the computer can delete all files in the storage medium in response to the disable command.
