The feeder or feed dog (17) has a transport section (28) provided for implementation of a transport movement in a recess of a needle plate. The transport section is provided adjacent to a needle-movement area. A base plate (30) is provided for connecting the transport section with a feeder-carrier i.e. supporting bar. A feeder wall (32) is arranged under the transport section adjacent to the area. The wall is designed such that the wall runs on a side of a sewing needle, during mounting of the feeder. The needle is turned away from a gripper, which co-acts with the needle during sewing. An independent claim is also included for a sewing machine with a needle bar.
