1362911 Flange facing machines; gauging DND CORP 16 June 1972 [2 July 1971 3 Jan 1972] 28412/72 Headings B3T and B3B A flange facing machine comprises a base 20 which is releasably securable in the bore 10 of a flanged tubular member P and from which extends a support column 25 on which is mounted for rotation thereabout, a frame R, the frame carrying a slideway 33 on which is mounted a tool carrying assembly 40 with a cutting tool C. The frame is supported on the column by way of a bearing 55 and the rotation of the frame about the column is effected by a motor 60 carried on the frame and which is connected by gearing and chains-and-sprockets 65, 66, 75, 76 and 30 to the frame to rotate the frame with the cutting tool about the column, the sprocket 30 being rigidly attached to the frame. The cutting tool assembly is displaceable radially of the axis of rotation of the frame, automatically as the frame rotates thereby facilitating the facing of the flange. The traversing of the cutting-tool is effected by way of gearing 43-47 in a gear-box 42 on the end of the slideway 33, the gearing being selectively engageable with a ring gear 25c on the frame R and with a feed screw 41, the tool thus actuated being traversable radially inward or outward as required. An alternative arrangement of the machine is shown in Figs. 8 and 10 in which the drive between the column and frame is effected by worm and wheel instead of the chain-and-sprocket mechanism of the embodiment in Figs. 1 and 2. Means (not shown) is also described using a D.T.I. or pointer for accurately aligning the base in the bore of the flanged member to ensure concentricity of the axes of the member and the column and frame. Also, alternative forms of base are described including cross-members with radially adjustable screwed feet and wedge expanding means for radially displacing clamping jaws engageable with the bore of the tubular flanged member.
