Desorption of charged adsorbents - using gas streams low in oxygen and contg combustible ingredients

Charged adsorbents esp. activated carbon, are regenerated by a hot gas stream contg. combustible ingredients, pref. CO and/or H2. The hot gas pref. comes from a burner operated with less than the stoichiometric amount of air, pref. air valves of 0.65-0.8. It is pref. cooled to 600 degrees C by spraying in water before use for desorption, or by heat exchange with the air supply to the initial burner or the secondary burner in which the desorbed material is destroyed. To cool the bed after desorption, the gas stream is pref. cooled to 150 degrees C by water spraying. Combustion of the absorbent bed by use of hot air is avoided and the gas stream contg. the desorbed material can be burnt or catalytically oxidised without further heating or use of more fuel.
