Fluidised bed coking/gasification process - with recycle of hot gas and coke

An integrated fluidised bed coking/gasification process for the prodn. of coke and a gas contg. H2 and CO comprises (a) reacting a carbonaceous material with a Conradson carbon content of >=5 wt.% in a fluidised bed coking zone at 482-649 degrees C to form coke; (b) introducing a fraction of this coke into a heating zone at a temp. 37.8-149 degrees C higher than the temp. in the coking zone; (c) introducing a fraction of this heated coke into a gasification zone operating at temps. higher than those in the heating zone; (d) reacting the coke fraction with steam and an O2-contg. gas stream to produce a hot gas stream contg. H2 and CO; (e) passing the hot gas stream to the heating zone to satisfy any heat requirements in this zone by imparting part of its heat to the coke; (f) recovering the cooled gas stream; and (g) introducing the coke from the gasification zone either into the coking zone to supply heat, or into the heating zone to supply heat, in which case a fraction of the coke from the heating zone is then recycled to the coking zone to supply heat.
