A fuel assembly (10) for a nuclear reactor that employs dissimilar materials for the fuel assembly grid (20) and the control rod guide thimbles (18). The guide thimbles (18) are secured to the grid (20) employing a through grid cell sleeve (56) that is welded to the grid (20) and spot weld rings (64) that are secured over the sleeve (56) and welded directly to the guide tube through windows in the sleeve (56).
