1482474 Energy absorbing FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 9 Oct 1974 [9 Oct 1973] 43706/74 Heading F2S [Also in Division B7] An energy absorbing bumper assembly for a vehicle comprises a rigid backing member 204 secured in use to the vehicle, a resiliently deformable shell 202 secured to the backing member to define therewith a chamber, and a plurality of partitions 218 formed integrally with the shell and extending from the shell towards the backing member to divide the chamber into a plurality of compartments 220, at least some of the partitions having a free edge 222 spaced from the backing member by a distance less than the dimension of the partitions in the direction in which they extend from the shell towards the backing member. In operation the free edges 222 contact the backing member 204 upon an impact to the bumper assembly thereby restricting communication between compartments 220 so that air is forced between compartments to absorb energy. Each partition may have an orifice or valve through which air can also be forced to absorb energy. All partitions may have an edge 222 spaced from the backing member as shown, or alternatively the edges of some partitions may contact the backing member. The shell may be made of urethane and the backing member of aluminium, and a flexible trim strip 236 may be mounted on the shell. |
