Disclosed is a liquid crystal display device (100) which comprises an active matrix substrate (120), an opposing substrate (140), and a homeotropicaily aligned liquid crystal layer (160) disposed between the active matrix substrate (120) and the opposing substrate (140). A photoalignment film (128, 148) is provided on the active matrix substrate (120) and/or the opposing substrate (140). The liquid crystal display device (100) further comprises orientation maintaining layers (130, 150) provided between the photoalignment films (128, 148) and the liquid crystal layer (160). The orientation maintaining layers (130, 150) include polymers (132, 152) wherein photopolymerizable compounds are polymerized.
