POROUS CARBON MATERIAL AND PROCESS FOR PRODUCTION THEREOF

Provided is a porous carbon material which contains sub-nano pores of 0.45 to 1.0 nm in diameter in a great volume with a sharp distribution and which is particularly useful as a gas adsorbent.  The process for production of a porous carbon material is characterized by heating phenol resin composite moldings comprising 100 parts by weight of a phenol resin and 150 to 450 parts by weight of sodium hydroxide and/or potassium hydroxide in a non-oxidizing atmosphere at a temperature of 420 to 850 °C to form a carbonized material, and washing the carbonized material to remove sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide from the carbonized material.
