1457837 Processing radio-active waste KERNFORSCHUNG mbH GES FUR and WERNER & PFLEIDERER 3 Dec 1974 [12 Dec 1973] 52150/74 Heading G6R Apparatus for treating radio-active and/or toxic waste comprises a heated mixer and extruder 8 into which the waste is introduced at 42 and a carrier material, e.g. bitumen, is introduced at 41, one or more vapour outlets 13 comprising observation windows, condensers 14, and distillate collector 24, the mixture being extruded through spout 28 and loaded into containers 32; the improvements according to the invention are means for cleaning the observation windows, means for removing deposits from the lower part of outlets 13, two alternatelyoperating filters 23, and an interrupter bowl 37 forming part of the means for loading the containers 32. The waste treated may be aqueous concentrates, sludges, or ion exchange resins. In the apparatus described, mixing and extruding are effected by intermeshing parallel screws 9, 10. Cleaning of the observation windows and the vapour outlets is effected by steam jets, Fig. 2 (not shown). The filters 23, Fig. 3 (not shown) include sieves to remove bitumen particles and a substance to absorb oil. The interrupter bowl 37 serves to catch extrudate when a full container 32 is replaced using rotary disc 31.
