The device has a steering wheel (2) with an airbag triggered during detection of an impact on a motor vehicle, and received by an upper part of a steering column (21). The wheel is pressed axially while being retracted under an effect of pressure exerted on the airbag by a driver so as to be blocked angularly by a rotation blocking unit (20) at the end of pressing course. The unit has a realigning device operated during the course to realign the wheel in a defined angular position. The realigning device has a realigning finger (24) located at an axial distance (C) from a chamfer (28).
