PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new indicator which is excellent in its simplicity of a structure and can indicate the generation of a deformation when an external force is applied or a degree of deformation (deformation amount) and to particularly provide a deformation amount indicator used for detecting the deformation or the deformation amount of an article made of a polymer molded member to which a deformation of a prescribed amount or more is applied by the external force. SOLUTION: In the deformation amount indicator used for detecting the deformation or the deformation amount of the article made of the polymer molded member to which the deformation of the prescribed amount or more is applied by the external force and a method for detecting the deformation or the deformation amount of the article using the deformation amount indicator, the deformation amount indicator includes a polymer component composed of a polymer and dye and indicates the deformation amount by the external force. In the polymer component, the dye is fixed in a specific molecule dispersed state in the polymer. The deformation amount indicator can be discolored to a hue different from an initial hue when the polymer component is deformed to the prescribed amount or more by the external force.
