<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the degree of combustion noise and/or the generation amount of smoke during transitional operation of an internal combustion engine, within an allowable range as much as possible. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This fuel injection control system for an internal combustion engine estimates the degree of combustion noise and the generation amount of smoke, which occur under an actual cylinder oxygen concentration, and the degree of combustion noise and the generation amount of smoke, which occur under a target cylinder oxygen concentration.
