PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for treating diseases associated with demyelination by increasing oligodendrocytes and oligodendrocyte precursor cells in mammals. SOLUTION: The invention provides a method for treating diseases associated with demyelination comprising enhancing the formation of oligodendrocytes and oligodendrocyte precursor cells by administering a prolactin to mammals. In the method, prolactin can be used alone, or in conjunction with administration of neural stem cells or oligodendrocyte precursor cells. Also in the method, additional compounds that improve oligodendrocyte proliferation, differentiation or survival are optionally administered concurrently with prolactin.
