<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ultrahigh pressure mercury discharge lamp whose quartz bulb is hard to destroy and whose reliability is high. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An ultrahigh pressure mercury discharge lamp, comprising an arc tube 2 having a pair of electrode systems 24a, 24b encapsulated in a quartz bulb, is characterized in that the pair of electrode systems 24a, 24b comprise: electrodes 21a, 21b having welding portions 21a-2, 21b-2, respectively; foils 22a, 22b having one end welded to the welding portion 21a-2, 21b-2, respectively; and lead lines 23a, 23b connected to the other ends of the foils 22a, 22b, respectively, wherein opening portions 22a-1, 22b-1 are provided near the welding portions 21a-2, 21b-2 of the foils 22a, 22b, respectively.
