<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To specify a failure place of a communication network with a simple configuration without adding a circuit configuration to each electronic control unit about a failure detecting method and a failure detection system for a communication network. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the method for detecting a failure of the communication network in which a plurality of electronic control units (ECU) are connected to a communication bus, a controller connected to the communication bus is first made to detect a communication error in the communication bus. Then, after the controller detects the communication error in the communication bus, the controller is made to perform a transmission stop request for sequentially stopping transmission by the plurality of electronic control units to the communication bus one by one, to discriminate whether a communication error occurs in the communication bus whenever the plurality of electronic control units are sequentially subjected to transmission stop one by one according to the transmission stop request, and to specify a failure place on the communication network on the basis of the discrimination result.
