<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic document feeder and an image forming apparatus in which a document is less likely to drop from a paper feed tray and a paper discharge tray when a feeder body of the automatic document feeder is automatically opened. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The automatic document feeder 100, in which the feeder body 110 is openably/closably loaded on a platen 210 on the upper surface of a document reader 200 by hinge coupling, is provided with: detection means 130, 140 which are provided on at least one of the paper feed tray 111 and the paper discharge tray 112 of the feeder body 110 and detect the document loading state on the trays on which the detection means are provided; a drive means 160 for rotationally driving the feeder body 110, in the direction of being floated from the platen 210 and opened; an instruction means 179 for performing an instruction for driving the driving means 160; and a control means 172 for suppressing drive of the drive means 160 or performing drive amount control, based on detection results made by the detection means 130, 140 in priority to the instruction of the instruction means 179.
