<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure a protection function and remove a shunt resistor to enhance the conversion efficiency in a chopper power supply that operates, in a self-excited non-continuous mode. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The chopper power supply includes: a switching element; a reactor and a regenerative diode installed at an output end of the switching element; a smoothing capacitor installed on the opposite side to the switching element connection end of the reactor; reference voltage; an error amplifier that compares the voltage of the smoothing capacitor with the reference voltage; and a clamp circuit that prevents the reference voltage from becoming equal to or higher than the voltage of the output end of the switching element. The error amplifier includes a drive circuit having a function of, when it is determined that the reference voltage is higher than the smoothing capacitor voltage, turning on the switching element, for a time not which is longer than a fixed period.
