<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backing metal for welding that facilitates formation of a positioning means for positioning the backing metal body for a column. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The backing metal for welding is used in butt welding between a column 1 made of steel pipe and a base plate or between the column and a diaphragm 2. The backing metal body 3 is formed in conformity with the cross sectional shape of the column so that the outer peripheral face comes into contact with the inner peripheral face of the column. In addition, on the outer periphery of the backing metal body, there is planted at least one positioning pin 4 for one side of the column for the purpose of positioning the mounting position of the backing metal body on the column. As the positioning in tacking the backing metal body to the column can be easily and accurately performed, efficiency of welding operation can be attained. Also, only the planting of the positioning pin is sufficient in accordance with the size of the column to be welded, so that installation of the positioning pin is facilitated.
