<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a quality of sewing by stably supplying a thread without pulling a thread on the side of seams. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A looper thread tension mechanism 1 of a sewing machine includes a looper thread tension cam (80) which is provided on the looper thread path between a looper (13) and a thread tension apparatus (30), absorbs the slack of the looper thread when the looper moves back by engaging and pulling the lower thread (T) by rotation, and supplying the thread from a bobbin. The looper thread tension mechanism 1 includes: a first thread griping member (50) and a second thread gripping member (62) which are provided in a separable and approachable manner while opposing each other with the looper thread therebetween on the side of the looper compared with a position where the looper thread tension cam engages with the looper thread on the path of the looper thread; and a thread gripping cam (82) which is provided coaxially with the looper thread tension cam to rotate with the looper thread tension cam, and moves at least the first or second thread gripping member at a predetermined timing of the rotation of the looper thread tension cam, thereby making the first and second thread gripping members approach each other to grip the looper thread.
