<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that has a cleaning means for efficiently cleaning off toner adhering to a photoreceptor and an intermediate transfer belt in a short time when restarting the image forming operation from a recording paper conveyance failure caused in a paper feed section. Ž<P>SOLUTION: If the opening/closing of a first cover 10a (a cover accessible to an intermediate transfer body, a developing unit, a secondary transfer roller, and so on) among members constituting the image forming apparatus is detected (Yes in P4, P5) when restarting the image forming operation from a recording paper conveyance failure, the entire image area is cleaned. If a second cover 10b (covers other than the first cover 10a) is opened/closed (NO in P4, P5), a reset switch is turned on by an operator (P7), or a predetermined time has elapsed (P8), an image area where an image is formed on the photoreceptor or the intermediate transfer belt is specified based upon an image signal, and only the specified image area is cleaned.
