PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology that prevents a document from being accidentally disposed of. SOLUTION: A document management system (S) includes a document management information storage means, an identification information reading component (24), a document reading component (29), a document disposal component controlling means, and a document image storage means. The document management information storage means stores therein pieces of management information including at least document identification information (20a) attached to a document (20) and a storage period of the document (20). The identification information-reading component (24) reads the document identification information (20a) attached to the document (20). The document reading component (29) reads an image of the document (20) when the document (20) meets a predetermined reading condition, based on the document identification information (20a) read by the identification information-reading component (24). The document disposal component controlling means controls a document disposal component (34) and disposes of the document (20), when the document (20) meets a predetermined disposal condition.
