PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a convenient key input device, its control method and a program and a portable terminal with less number of depression times of keys in inputting characters. SOLUTION: The key input device 20 includes: a character string selection part 16 for selecting and outputting any of a plurality of character strings in response to the depression of an input key 14; a gradient sensor 12 for detecting the gradient change of a casing 19; a character selection part 17 for selecting and outputting any of a plurality of characters in the character string in response to the presence/absence of the gradient change or the direction of the gradient change of the casing 19 during the continuation of the depression of the input key 14 detected by the gradient sensor 12; and a character decision part 18 for deciding the character selected by the character selection part 17 in response to the release of the depression of the input key 14.
