<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a short-cut nanofiber having a fiber diameter of 10-1,000 nm and excellent water dispersibility, and to obtain a wet-laid nonwoven fabric formed by using the short-cut nanofiber obtained by the method. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The method for producing the short-cut nanofiber includes weight reduction treatment in a sodium hydroxide solution of a sea-island conjugate fiber having an island component composed of a fiber-forming thermoplastic polymer and having an island diameter of 10-1,000 nm, and a sea component composed of a polymer easily soluble in an alkaline aqueous solution compared with the fiber-forming thermoplastic polymer, thereby dissolving and removing the sea component to split the sea-island conjugate fiber to multifilaments A having a single fiber diameter D of 10-1,000 nm, and the cutting of the obtained multifilaments A in a ratio L/D of the fiber length L to the single fiber diameter D of 100-1,500.
