<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrode for electrochemical display elements which has a simple member configuration and can be driven by a low voltage and is free from characteristic changes in repeated driving and has a high rewrite speed, and a display element using the same. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The electrode for electrochemical display elements contains at least a carbon material and has a nitrogen-containing functional group aligned on a surface of the carbon material and has an auxiliary compound which can be electrochemically changed to the nitrogen-containing functional group by redox reaction, fixed thereto.
