The method involves determining a combustion pressure (Pdiff) in model based depending on an ignition delay, a maximum value (Prise) of the combustion pressure and a rise time between a beginning of combustion and attaining the maximum value for the combustion pressure. A time dependency of the combustion pressure is sectionally approximated by a mathematical function e.g. parabola. The parabola depends on the maximum value of the combustion pressure and the rise time, and is represented by a preset equation. An independent claim is also included for a control device for an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle.
