Water-soluble tetracyclic and pentacyclic anionic bacteriochlorophyll derivatives and their uses

Disclosed is a bacteriochlorophyll derivative containing at least one negatively charged group or acidic groups that is converted to negatively charged group at the physiological pH or both, of the formula (I) or (II), wherein the variables are as defined in the specification. These bacteriochlorophyll derivatives are suitable for use in photodynamic therapy of tumors and diagnosis thereof.
